Here are some items every homeowner can tackle on their own.
AC filter replacement and maintenance: It's best to replace your AC filter every 2-3 months. But, if you own pets, it's best to replace it every 30 days. You can even take a wet dry vacuum and gently vacuum your cooling fins inside of your indoor unit. Make sure if you do this, you go with the fins and not against the fins. I personally do this every 30 days, because we own pets. If you don't own pets, you can do it every 3 months. You should also put bleach down your drain line on your indoor AC unit or take your wet dry vac and hook it up to the drip pipe by the outdoor unit. Hold the hose from the wet dry vac on the pipe for 3 minutes, make sure you get a tight connection. It will save you from needing to get your AC unit replaced due to non-maintenance. You should also hose your outdoor unit off every 3 months.
Mold and mildew growth prevention: Make sure you wash your shower or bathtub doors, and walls every 2 weeks. You don't need any harsh chemicals to do this, you can go to your local hardware store or anywhere that sells cleaning products and get products that best suit your budget and lifestyle. Make sure before you start using any chemicals inside of a closed area like a bathroom, you turn on your exhaust fan and or open a window inside of your bathroom.
Carpet maintenance: It is best to deep clean your carpets quarterly. You can either go out and buy or rent a carpet cleaner at any Walmart or hardware store. They even sell chemicals that are pet friendly and or hypoallergenic. Not only will that save the life of your carpeting, but it will cut down on dust and allergies, especially in allergy season.
Wall maintenance: Maintaining your walls might seem like a big daunting task, but it's not. If you ding your wall, whether it'll be by moving furniture, pets, kids playing. It is easy to fix with a little bit of spackle a putty knife or caulking. All you have to do is put a little bit in the middle of the dent and smooth it out, make sure it's flat. The only problem is it won't match your paint, so you will have to repaint that area. If you spill something on your wall, it's easy to clean up as long as it's semi-gloss or better paint. If it's flat paint, you're not going to be able to wash off stains, you will have to repaint it. Washing your walls quarterly, which is every 3 months will cut down on dust and allergies in your household.
